2002, David Piper, the Lord of Warleigh famously advertised his
71 room mansion house in 111 acres of South Hams countryside in
the International Herald Tribune either for sale outright or look
ing for a suitable partner to become his 'Lady of Warleigh'. Having so far found no suitable lady despite some 1800 replies, 100 newspaper articles, 30 radio and TV appearances including CNN and BBC News 24, he sold Warleigh and 105 acres last October. There was so much interest from people who wanted to buy part of the beautiful estate that he has now installed some impressive gates to the entrance to his retained land at Great Warleigh Farm and is embarking upon selling up to 400 individual plots varying in size and price from 200sq foot (£1000) to 5000sq foot (£35,000) plus legal fees. The ebullient Lord has produced over 30 ideas as to what one could do with them ranging from planting trees in memory of a loved one and scattering ashes, to creating a small vineyard, rose arbour, truffle tree plantation or Japanese garden! Plots would make ideal gifts for the person who has everything and a management service can be provided and will be available from next week. 'The People Magazine' - 23rd December 2002 Oh,
Good Lord! Some are to the manor born. Others do what they can. Take David Piper, Lord of the Manor of Warleigh, in Southwest England. The son of an accountant, Piper, 52, actually grew up in Essex, near London. But in 1999 he purchased Warleigh House - and the title that came with it. What the lonely Lord didn't have was a Lady of the Manor - or enough cash to keep up with the $1,500 a week maintenance. So, on November 9th he placed a personal ad in the International Herald Tribune seeking 'an attractive 25 - 35-year-old entrepreneurial, intelligent professional of independent means' to become Lady of Warleigh. 'I hope to meet someone who falls in love with the house,' Piper says, 'and then falls in love with me.' Apart from
being 'educated with a wide interest in music,' prospective partners
for the twice-divorced father of four should possess a decorator's
knack (or a fat pocket-book). The estimated cost of renovating Warleigh:
$1.5 million. In fact the place is so dilapidated that Piper, an
entrepreneur who made his multimillion-dollar fortune in property
development, lives in a hotel he owns nearby. But should his perfect
match prove penniless, he's willing to sell: 'Love,' he says, 'effectively
knows no bounds.' OWN
A PART OF HERITAGE. Plant a Tree in Memory of a loved relative or pet for only £100 extra. Apply-The Comptroller General There has been much interest in purchasing the Warleigh Estate. The Mansion House, outbuildings and some 100 acres have now been sold.
The Lord of The Manor of Warleigh feels that it is only fair to
pemit wider ownership of part of this beautiful Estate. He has therefore
made arrangements for an area of North Point Park at Great Warleigh
Farm, Station Road, Tamerton Foliot, Plymouth to be subdivided into
plots of 200 square feet which are being offered for sale freehold.
Some larger plots will also be available.
He is very interested in planting more broadleaf trees and has suggested
that owners of the plots might like to plant a tree in memory of
a loved relative or pet. No development will be permitted at present on any plot but touring caravans could be placed on plots for a few weeks each year. Owners might like to cultivate plots themselves. Plant your own Vineyard at Great Warleigh Farm, Click Here for further details.
