PRESS RELEASE FROM THE LORD OF WARLEIGH

PRESS RELEASE - 1 NOVEMBER 2005

The eccentric Lord of The Manor of Warleigh who famously advertised for a Lady of Warleigh in 2002 in The International Herald Tribune whilst trying to find the correct 'Lady' to help him refurbish his Estate is still being pursued by suitors.
The initial publicity throughout the world was worth some £20m in value of television exposure and over 100 pages of international media - ten times what he acheived for the bulk of the Estate he sold at Warleigh, However he retains the title and six acres at Great Warleigh Farm, but still says he is penniless!

Despite all his problems he is proceeding with the refurbishment of his Hotel Wiltun Grand , now the only hotel on Plymouth's dramatic waterfront.
He has taken further forward the adventurous decision to install marble bathrooms into all rooms as well as on-line computers/televisions/dvd's and will be streaming onto his website at www.worldofwarleigh.com activities from January. These will not only include real time images of the fascinating marine activity in Plymouth Sound - Europe's Greatest Natural Harbour but of musical, art and poetry functions to be held in the newly established Arts Club of Plymouth. From time to time even the activities in the Kitchen will be on line as David , an accomplished chef , will be overseeing the new restaurant - Warleigh's - at the hotel. although he admits that the evening Wiltun Thai might be beyond his culinary knowledge.
He is determined to keep true to The Best of The West, and not only will some produce be farmed on his land , but he has agreed to take the daily catch of a boat in Plymouth whatever that might be............Also he hopes some meat will come from the old Warleigh Farm...............
It is now envisaged that the Arts Club of Plymouth in the re-vitalised Wiltun Hotel will open around Christmas 2005 with membership being free until April 2006 - providing any member purchases a hi-tech id card at £12 per person. Thereafter, rates will be at half price of £100pa plus vat or £10 per month plus vat for two years.
That will give access at all times to the Arts Club and 20% discount off of rooms and event ticket prices. Corporate membership will follow but be limited.
The idea is to create a traditional 'London Club' atmosphere but with benefit of the stunning sea views that no one else can match in the UK.
He has ambitions to merge with other marine based UK Arts Clubs and indeed establish some in France.
David said today 'that the only way forward is to establish a chain for the enjoyment of like minded artistic people in sophisticated surroundings and if that means creating a company for floatation on the Stock Market that might well be the route to take.' This is a niche market that many want to enjoy. Great food, great scenery, great art and great music..........
In the meantime he still has to meet potential 'Lady's' and has his mind focussed on a 36 year old from the USA - once again a property agent who hopes to visit him shortly! They have been in touch for two years, but her love of bagpipes he feels somewhat intimidating! Ladies from South East Asia and the Ukraine continually bombard his web site, but he remains unsure........................

The Wiltun Hotel at 39 Grand Parade is now the only hotel directly on the waterside in Central Plymouth with stunning views over Plymouth Sound, one of the most beautiful natural harbours in Europe. It is to become a boutique hotel and arts club.

While use of the facilities of the club's bar and waterfront terrace will be in the main restricted to members who have reciprocal membership of other arts clubs in the UK, Europe and the USA, certain functions will be open to members of the general public. Regular classical music recitals, masterclasses, painting, sculpture and ceramic exhibitions (with local items for sale) and courses will be held. Fortnightly jazz evenings, poetry and music nights and social events will be organised. Membership is £100 pa PLUS VAT. (Applications via 01752 667072).

The restaurant specialising in Thai food will operate for four nights each week and eclectic food will be served with the best of the West operating on the remaining three nights under the direction of the Patron of the Arts Club, The Lord of the Manor of Warleigh. Members will also be able to obtain classical meals from lunchtime until 1.00am which could (weather permitting) be served on the terrace as it could be to members of the general public attending functions open to them.

Residents staying in the hotel would benefit from 24 hour room service for similar feasts. The Arts Club of Plymouth would operate on a similar basis to www.penzanceartsclub.co.uk, with which it would hope to merge soon.

Suitable seafront premises have also been located in Roscoff which if established as an Arts Club would establish an artistic exchange triangle between Devon, Cornwall and Brittany further cementing links which have been there for centuries.

Land for Sale - Latest News

On 8/9 November 2002, David Piper, the Lord of Warleigh famously advertised his 71 room mansion house in 111 acres of South Hams countryside in the International Herald Tribune either for sale outright or look ing for a suitable partner to become his 'Lady of Warleigh'.
This became a news item first scooped by the Sunday Times who announced the fact to a far greater audience on 1st December by making Warleigh one of it's 'Houses of the Week!'

Having so far found no suitable lady despite some 1800 replies, 100 newspaper articles, 30 radio and TV appearances including CNN and BBC News 24, he sold Warleigh and 105 acres last October.

There was so much interest from people who wanted to buy part of the beautiful estate that he has now installed some impressive gates to the entrance to his retained land at Great Warleigh Farm and is embarking upon selling up to 400 individual plots varying in size and price from 200sq foot (£1000) to 5000sq foot (£35,000) plus legal fees. The ebullient Lord has produced over 30 ideas as to what one could do with them ranging from planting trees in memory of a loved one and scattering ashes, to creating a small vineyard, rose arbour, truffle tree plantation or Japanese garden! Plots would make ideal gifts for the person who has everything and a management service can be provided and will be available from next week.

'The People Magazine' - 23rd December 2002

Oh, Good Lord!
Marry this man and get this house! And a title! (And the dog too!)

Some are to the manor born. Others do what they can. Take David Piper, Lord of the Manor of Warleigh, in Southwest England. The son of an accountant, Piper, 52, actually grew up in Essex, near London. But in 1999 he purchased Warleigh House - and the title that came with it. What the lonely Lord didn't have was a Lady of the Manor - or enough cash to keep up with the $1,500 a week maintenance. So, on November 9th he placed a personal ad in the International Herald Tribune seeking 'an attractive 25 - 35-year-old entrepreneurial, intelligent professional of independent means' to become Lady of Warleigh. 'I hope to meet someone who falls in love with the house,' Piper says, 'and then falls in love with me.'

Apart from being 'educated with a wide interest in music,' prospective partners for the twice-divorced father of four should possess a decorator's knack (or a fat pocket-book). The estimated cost of renovating Warleigh: $1.5 million. In fact the place is so dilapidated that Piper, an entrepreneur who made his multimillion-dollar fortune in property development, lives in a hotel he owns nearby. But should his perfect match prove penniless, he's willing to sell: 'Love,' he says, 'effectively knows no bounds.'

There has been much interest in purchasing the Warleigh Estate. The Mansion House, outbuildings and some 100 acres have now been sold.

The Lord of The Manor of Warleigh feels that it is only fair to pemit wider ownership of part of this beautiful Estate. He has therefore made arrangements for an area of North Point Park at Great Warleigh Farm, Station Road, Tamerton Foliot, Plymouth to be subdivided into plots of 200 square feet which are being offered for sale freehold. Some larger plots will also be available.
Owners would be able to use the plots for any purpose permitted under the relevant planning acts in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, situated in the glorious South Hams.

He is very interested in planting more broadleaf trees and has suggested that owners of the plots might like to plant a tree in memory of a loved relative or pet.
The plots will be sold as grassland and from April 2004 a maintenance service for each plot will be provided twice annually when the grassland would be cut.

No development will be permitted at present on any plot but touring caravans could be placed on plots for a few weeks each year. Owners might like to cultivate plots themselves.
